| 9/25/09 - Micrel Inc., (NASDAQ: MCRL) announced that it
will be showing the industry's newest and most innovative high-performance,
low-power, low-cost IC solutions at Embedded Systems Conference (ESC)
Boston. The show is being held at The Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA.
Micrel's booth is No. 326. Micrel will showcase new products for fiber
optic and Ethernet as well as demonstrate a broadband wireless networking reference
design, targeting low-data rate applications, utilizing Micrel RF
transceivers, Zilog Microcontrollers and based upon Micrel's MicrelNet "Star Cluster-of-Trees"
wireless networking solution.
Analog Solutions
The low-data wireless networking reference design targets industrial
control applications, such as lighting control, AMR and point-to-point
cable replacement. The design features the MICRF505 or MICRF506 , 410MHz to 950MHz ISM-Band FHSS
FSK Transceivers. These devices support data rates up to 200kbps while
only consuming 34mW of power in receive mode, and 70mW of power in transmit
mode, while transmitting at +10dBm output power. The devices are capable
of achieving a sensitivity of -113dBm at 2.4kbps. The reference design
features MicrelNet™ royalty and licensing
free "star-cluster" wireless networking software. The design was developed
in cooperation with Zilog and features the Z8 Encore! XP F1680
microcontroller.
The Z8 Encore! XP F1680 Microcontroller Series is a family of highly
integrated, low voltage/low power, high performance 8-bit mixed-mode Flash
microcontrollers designed for use in a variety of RF solutions such as RFID
readers, remote controls and automatic meter readers. The Z8 Encore! XP
Z81680 Microcontroller Series, based on a 20 MHz register-based eZ8 CPU
core with memory-to-memory arithmetic operation, includes up to 24 Kbytes
Flash memory with in-circuit programming capability, up to 2 Kbytes
register RAM and 256 Bytes EEPROM capability, a built-in internal precision
oscillator with programmable output from 43.2 kHz to 11 MHz and multiple
serial interfaces including two LIN UARTs, SPI, and I2C. This series is
also a low power series, supporting 1.8-3.6 V operation with very low
ACTIVE, HALT and STOP mode currents, and many power saving features.
"Zilog's Z8 Encore! XP F1680 Microcontroller Series help power a variety of
RF solutions, and our collaboration with Micrel has allowed the two
companies to develop an ideal solution that will save our collective
customers money and time to market," said Mike Speckman, Zilog vice
president of worldwide sales.
Micrel will also showcase the following products and reference designs:
High Bandwidth Solutions
4.25G SFP Module Reference Design: SY88422L + SY88403BL + MIC3002
Created by Micrel for Fiber Optic customers, the SY88422L is a single 3.3V supply, small
form-factor laser driver capable of delivering up to 90mA modulation
current with integrated 100mA bias current. This driver, in combination
with Micrel's MIC3002 controller and SY88403BL 4.25G limiting post amplifier,
is an ideal solution for intermediate-reach and long-reach SFF and SFP
designs in multi-rate MAN, WAN, SAN and LAN applications up to 4.25Gbps,
including FC, GbE, SONET/SDH, and WDM.
Ethernet Solutions
Highly Integrated System-on-a-Chip Solutions, KSZ9692PB / KSZ9021RL
The KSZ9692PB is a highly integrated 10/100/100Base-T Gigabit
System-on-a-Chip (SoC) featuring an ARM 922T 32-bit processor, IP security
engine and a comprehensive set of peripherals that address the
cost-sensitive, high-performance needs of a wide variety of networking and
communications applications including enhanced residential gateways,
high-end printer servers, VOIP systems, IP-based multimedia systems,
wireless Access Points/Mesh Nodes, USB device servers, Industrial Control,
video surveillance systems and SMB/SME network security, including VPN
routers.
The KSZ9021RL is a single-port 10/100/100Base-T Gigabit transceiver that supports
data transfer over standard CAT-5 unshielded twisted pair cable. The
solution features robust performance and very low power consumption. The
on-chip integration of termination resistors and LDO controller function,
coupled with built-in diagnostic features, significantly reduces cost and
complexity in gigabit Ethernet applications. The device is ideal for
enabling the highest level of gigabit Ethernet performance in networking
applications such as media converters, GEPON ONU routers, wired/wireless
Gigabit routers and VoIP gateways.
Single-Port 10/100BASE-T/TX Embedded MAC+PHY Embedded Controller With
8/16/32-bit and SPI Host Interfaces, KSZ8851 Family
The KSZ8851 is a single-port 10/100BASE-T/TX embedded controller product
family with 8/16/32-bit and SPI host interfaces. The high throughput
device, KSZ8851-16/32MQL , is pin compatible with
Micrel's KSZ8841-16/32MQL and KSZ8842-16/32MQL product families and ideal
for a wide variety of Ethernet applications in the IPSTB, VoIP, and
Industrial Ethernet markets. The KSZ8851-16MLL integrates a Fast Ethernet
MAC/PHY with an 8/16-bit generic host processor interface in a smaller
package and the KSZ8851SNL , on the other hand, supports SPI
interface. The device has 18KB of internal buffer memory shared between
the RXQ and TXQ. The buffer memory on the receive queue is 12KB, while the
buffer memory for the transmit queue is 6KB. The solution supports both
Big-Endian and Little-Endian processors as well as IPv4/IPv6 checksum
generation and checking. These features greatly reduce CPU usage and
improve overall system performance. The KSZ8851 product family also gives
designers enhanced power management feature with energy detect mode.
Integrated 10/100BASE-T/TX/FX 3-Port Switch, KSZ8873 Family
The KSZ8873MLL
is a highly integrated 10/100BASE-T/TX 3-port switch on a chip
offering the industry's smallest footprint. It is designed to give
customers low port count and a cost-sensitive, power efficient, advanced
power management solution. Designed to support the GREEN requirement in
today's switch systems, the IC features advanced power management schemes
that include hardware power down, software power down, and the energy
detect mode that shuts down the transceiver when a port is idle. The
device also offers the by-pass mode which enables system-level power
savings. In this mode, the processor connected to the switch through the
MII interface can be shut down without impacting normal switch operation.
Applications suited to this solution include IP Set-Top Boxes, IP TV/IP TV
POF, IP Phones/Video Phones, Analog Telephone Adapters (ATAs), Automotive
Infotainment systems, industrial controls and FTTx CPE.
