Kasetsart University Builds Largest Academic Wi-Fi
Network in Southeast Asia with Cisco Aironet Wireless LAN
Solutions

Kasetsart University has built one of the largest academic
wireless networks in Southeast Asia with solutions from Cisco
Systems, Inc. The Cisco Aironet wireless network, covering 43
buildings and 800,000 square meters in the university's Bangkhen
campus, is a key building block in enabling Kasetsart's e-university
initiative. This initiative aims to use infocommunications
technology to enhance the learning and research process, enabling
faculty staff and students to access the university's resources
anytime, anywhere.
Dubbed KUWiN (Kasetsart University Wireless Network), the network
complements Kasetsart's Cisco-equipped wired networks including
NontriNet. NontriNet is a multicast and voice-over-IP- enabled
gigabit-class wide-area network that connects the Bangkhen campus
with three other campuses, Kampaengsaen, SakonNakhon and SriRacha,
as well as academic networks outside of Thailand.
Kasetsart has also begun extending KUWiN to its other campuses
starting with SakonNakhon and plans eventually to have all 30,000
students and staff in its various campuses wirelessly enabled.
Powering KUWiN on Bangkhen campus are more than 100 Cisco Aironet
1100 Series and Aironet 350 Series wireless LAN access points with
Cisco Catalyst 3500 Series switches in the back end.

Concourse Communications Reports Surge in Airport Wi-Fi
Usage |
| |
Concourse Communications reports that total user sessions
for its airport Wi-Fi networks grew 19% in August over July,
representing an annualized growth rate of over 600%. This
indicates that airports are one of the fastest rising Wi-Fi
usage locations in the country.
"There are about 15 airports in North America equipped with
airport-wide Wi-Fi and we are one of the few neutral-host
providers that support this service in multiple venues," says
Joe Beatty, CEO of Concourse Communications. "This puts us in
a unique position to collect data on airport Wi-Fi usage and
our August data represents the most rapid growth in usage that
we've seen to date," he adds.

Fulfilling a Greater Need for Seamless Roaming Will
Drive the Wi-Fi Services Markets |
| |
Wireless local area network (WLAN) operators in the Asia
Pacific region are currently challenged with increasing
accessibility, pricing, and quality of service of WLANs to
capture a larger share of the market.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, WLAN Services
Market, reveals that revenues in this industry totaled $107.8
million in 2002.
"The unavailability of service and patchy coverage in many
countries where prices are still considered high has the
effect of slowing WLAN adoption," states Frost & Sullivan
Industry Analyst June Liang.

Demand for Wi-Fi Hot Spots Sparks Provider
Landgrab |
| |
By late 2004, Wi-Fi hot spots will become a viable addition
to the enterprise remote-access strategy, according to META
Group, Inc. As hot-spot build-outs and interprovider roaming
agreements continue to expand, leading enterprises will
procure Wi-Fi services in a bundled fashion along with other
offerings such as cellular and internet dial services.
As the hot-spot market grows, enterprise customers should
evaluate providers on their ability to offer quality coverage,
interprovider roaming agreements, and bundled services, as
well as their long- term viability.
